My research focuses on how innovations to promote sustainability impact upon people’s everyday lives. Within this broad focus I am particularly interested in the inter-relationships between: the dynamics and evolution of social practices, how technologies are adopted and used in everyday life, and the effects of attempts to govern everyday life to try and steer it in more sustainable directions. In pursuing these interests, my work is situated at the interface between human geography, environmental sociology and science and technology studies.

My research is of direct relevance to a wide range of audiences beyond academia and I am always seeking to develop new partnerships beyond the academy. For example, in the last few years I have developed a series of masterclasses on ‘behaviour change for a low carbon future’ (with Adapt Low Carbon); I have presented my work on domestic electricity use to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, E.On and at an International Energy Agency workshop on energy demand; and I have co-authored a report on the roles of Champions approaches in encouraging pro-environmental behaviour in Universities (commissioned by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education).

Since September 2012 I have been a Lecturer in Environmental Science and Policy in the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA. In this role I will convene a module on Energy and People (commencing in spring 2014) and I also teach aspects of other modules on Sustainable Consumption; Sustainability and Society; Global Environmental Challenges, Theory of Environmental Assessment and Social Science Research Skills. As a researcher, I am a member of the Science, Society and Sustainability (3S) research group at UEA, Treasurer of the British Sociological Association’s Study Group on Climate Change and sit on the Editorial Board of the journal Energy Research and Social Science
