Biography

Tim joined the UEA Law School in August 2018, following 25 years in practice as a solicitor.

Tim qualified as a solicitor with Mills and Reeve in Norwich, and then spent a further six years with the firm conducting professional negligence litigation.

In 1999 Tim moved to an in-house solicitor role with Norwich Union plc (soon to become Aviva). In his 18 years with Aviva Tim held a number of senior management roles within the legal function and gained broad commercial, corporate and regulatory experience. Tim led the legal support to the RAC motoring business during its period of ownership by Aviva, and also led the legal support on a number of outsourcing and other transactions.

Tim was General Counsel to the Aviva UK and Ireland General Insurance and Health business between 2012 and 2017, leading a large legal and company secretarial team, and working closely with the executive management team and the Aviva Insurance Board.

In 2017 Tim moved from Aviva to the General Counsel Division of the Financial Conduct Authority, focussing on the regulation of insurance.

Tim’s motivation for joining UEA is that his broad professional experience will enable him to work with students as they develop skills and knowledge which will help them to establish successful careers (within or outside the legal profession). Tim leads the Law in Practice module, a year-long module which is taken by all LLB students. He is also the Law School’s Co-Director of Employability in which role he coordinates the many activities available to students to ensure that they combine rigorous academic study with the development of skills, work experience and attitudes that will help them to succeed in their working lives after graduating.

Tim maintains broad legal interests, including commercial law, insurance law and regulation, professional liability and corporate governance.
