Cardiovascular disease kills around 180,000 people in UK each year with around 88,000 deaths attributed to coronary heart disease and 49,000 to stroke.  Our overarching research goal is to understand the cellular and molecular processes that contribute to cardiovascular disease, particularly those that drive vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis.  As an early career scientist I trained in the laboratories of Professor David Beech FMedSci (Leeds) and Professor R. Alan North FRS (Manchester), and established an independent research group following the award of a prestigious BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship.  We collaborate with clinicians at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, partners in Pharmaceutical industry and other academic groups to tackle pressing and challenging projects.  Our current work focuses on the role of signalling chemokine peptides and extracellular nucleotides in leukocyte infiltration of arteries and the early onset of atherosclerosis; cellular signalling controlling adipocyte function and inflammation; and a drug discovery programme to identify chemical modulators of P2X4 receptor activity which controls arterial tone and leukocyte activation.

Our research is supported by the British Heart Foundation, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, The Physiological Society and the John & Pamela Salter Trust.

Teaching & Career Development

I lecture at Masters and Undergraduate level on topics of cellular signalling, human physiology, investigation of human disease and pharmacology.  I am the Director of Employability for the School of Biological Sciences and a mentor of the Physiological Society (London).

I am a member of the Medical Research Council Review committee, SCI Faculty Employability Executive, BIO Executive, BIO Teaching Executive and BIO Staff Student Liaison Committee.  Externally I am an Editor of Purinergic Signalling.

I am a BBSRC Regional Schools Champion currently working with secondary schools in Norfolk and Suffolk.  We have also worked with the BBC and press to disseminate our research to the general public.
