Academic Background

I work at the UEA as a Senior Research Associate. I am currently working on the SONATA project as part of RoSES, modeling variability in the Southern Ocean carbon cycle. I use a global ocean biogeochemical model, alongside observations of the Southern Ocean, to analyse trends in the Southern Ocean carbon content and elucidate potential mechanisms controlling these trends. 

My PhD at the UEA, with Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, CEFAS, and EnvEast, ran from 2015 - 2019 and is titled 'Role of gelatinous zooplankton in marine ecosystems and the carbon cycle'. For this project, I added gelatinous zooplankton (specifically Cnidaria medusae) to a global ocean biogeochemical model and investigated the impact this had on the modeled ecosystem and plankton groups. I also investigated the impact on the plankton carbon cycle and carbon export, as well as a case study on the combined influence of historic overfishing and climate change on the biomass of Cnidaria medusae and other plankton groups. This is the first instance of gelatinous zooplankton being included in a global ocean biogeochemical model.
