Academic Background

Biography

During and following the completion of a Bachelor’s programme in Geology (Saint Petersburg State University, Russia) I developed a particular interest in environmental aspects of Earth Sciences, including applications of geospatial technologies in sustainable and precision agriculture.

My Master’s research in environmental remote sensing at Bowling Green State University (Ohio, USA) included work with electromagnetic reflectance (hyperspectral and multispectral resolution, including satellite imagery) to compare and differentiate organic and conventional crops. This research together with further professional experience in Sustainable Drainage Systems and flood risk management have formed a special interest in the impact of land management practices on the state of aquatic environments.

In my PhD research I study how effective are catchment-based approaches and best management farming practices in reducing pesticide loss to surface water supplies. The goal of the project is to assess metaldehyde transport and persistence in the environment at a catchment scale – a catchment where farmers are encouraged to use alternative slug control methods instead of applying metaldehyde on their land.

My most recent research interests include: i) evaluation of the impact that land use and management practices make on water quality ii) transport and fate of pollutants in the environment, iii) effect of climatic and hydrological conditions on pollutants’ loss to watercourses.
