JEAN McNEIL is Reader in Creative Writing. She is the author of thirteen books, including six novels and a collection of short fiction. Her latest novel is Fire on the Mountain (2018). Her work has been shortlisted for several major literary prizes including the Governor-General's Award for fiction and is most recently the winner of the 2016 Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival's Grand Prize for her memoir Ice Diaries, based on the year she spent as writer in residence in Antarctica with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). She has undertaken official residencies in the Falkland Islands, in Svalbard, Norway, and aboard ship-based scientific expeditions to Greenland and across the Atlantic ocean. In 2010 and 2013 she was Carnegie Mellon Foundation Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Cape Town and the Western Cape in South Africa. Recently a collection of poetry, The Skeleton Coast, was shortlisted for The Poetry Business 2018 International Chapbook Prize; a short story, 'The Most Beautiful Voyage in the World,' was a finalist for the 2018 Everything Change Climate Fictions International Award, and an essay about tourism and terrorism on the Kenyan coast, 'The Kusi', was longlisted for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's 2018 National Non-Fiction Prize. She teaches two courses on the Prose Fiction MA, Prose Fiction Workshop and The Non-Fiction Novel.
