Biography

Helena Gillespie is Professor of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and Academic Director of Widening Participation at UEA. She is also a Principal Fellow of the HEA (PFHEA). 

Helena previously held the university wide role of Academic Director of Learning and Teaching Enhancement and before that was Associate Dean for Learning Teaching and Quality in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Helena also teachers in undergraduate and postgraduate courses.


Helena’s research into teaching and learning in Higher Education has been funded by both HEFCE and the HEA, and projects have resulted in publications in peer reviewed journals and conference presentations. Her international work is with UEA's partners as part of the Aurora Network on a project to widen participation in study abroad. Helena is a member of the committee organising the Annual Conference of Diversity Abroad in New Orleans, LA in March 2020. 

Before going into Higher Education, Helena’s professional experience was as a teacher and senior manager in primary schools and she maintains contact with the school sector through School Governor roles. She leads the university network for Governors which promotes strong links between UEA and the local educational community.
