Biography

I am Module Organiser for the module Introduction to Conference Interpreting, and also teach Spanish<>English Public Service Interpreting, Spanish>Engish Translation and Specialised Translation at undergraduate levels.

From Sep 2014-Jun 2018, I taught Conference Interpreting, Commercial Interpreting, Public Service Interpreting and Spanish>English translation on the MA programmes in Interpreting and Translation at Queen's University Belfast. My teaching is informed by my ongoing professional practice as a conference and public service interpreter and translator (specialising in Spanish and French).

In 2017-2018 I coordinated the Queen’s University Belfast team of the Accessible Culture and Training (ACT) project, a 3-year EU funded collaborative project on arts accessibility. Project activities included defining the profile of an arts accessibility manager, creating an online course (MOOC) on making arts events accessible, and strengthening links between people involved in arts accessibility locally and internationally. In 2016-2017 I was a Research Assistant and Dissemination Manager for the project.

I am the Treasurer of the European Association of Studies in Screen Translation, and I am a member of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies and a member of the European Society for Translation Studies.

PhD supervision

I would welcome applications from prospective PhD students in the area of audiovisual translation (AVT), particularly media and arts accessibility, subtitling, audio description, AVT for children, and the reception of translated AV content, including the use of eye tracking.

Academic Background

2017 - PhD in Translation, Queen’s University Belfast. Passed with no corrections.

My PhD thesis, Through a child’s eyes: investigating the effects of subtitle placement and reading level on children’s reception of subtitled audiovisual content (2017) investigated children’s reception of audiovisual content with interlingual subtitles. A mixed methods approach was employed, using eye tracking, scene recognition tests, content comprehension tests, questionnaires, interviews and participatory workshops.

2005 - MSc in Translating and Conference Interpreting, Heriot-Watt University. With distinction. Languages: Spanish and French
